About Hanuman Chalisa Illustrated

Last updated:

Hanuman Chalisa Illustrated is a free, mobile-friendly way to read, understand and listen to the Hanuman Chalisa, with a painting for every verse.

Where the text comes from

The Hindi text is the widely printed traditional version of the Hanuman Chalisa, attributed to Tulsidas. The hymn is centuries old and belongs to a shared devotional tradition. Small spelling and wording variations exist between printed editions; this site follows a common version.

Meanings and transliteration

The roman transliteration is an easy-to-read spelling of the Hindi. The English meaning and the Hindi arth of each verse are original explanations written for this site, based on the traditional understanding of the text. The short story note under each verse links the line to the episode of the Ramayana it refers to. They are meant as a helpful guide and not as a scholarly translation.

Paintings and audio

The forty paintings are digital illustrations made for this site, one for each chaupai. The audio is a devotional bhajan rendition of the Hanuman Chalisa, played at 1.5x speed so the whole hymn takes about nine minutes.

How the site works

On the illustrated version, swipe up or down on a phone, or scroll or use the arrow keys on a computer, to move from verse to verse. Every verse has its own web address that you can share. If you prefer plain text, use the lyrics, meaning or Hindi pages.
