He is fearless in battle, gentle in speech and humble before Ram. In the Ramayana Ram himself praises his careful, clear and respectful way of speaking. For millions of devotees he is the remover of fear and trouble (Sankat Mochan) and the model of selfless devotion (bhakti). #### Hanuman and the Hanuman Chalisa The forty verses of the Hanuman Chalisa retell many of these events in devotional form: his tiny form before Sita and his fierce form that burned Lanka, the Sanjeevani herb, the leap over the ocean and the swallowing of the sun. Read the meaning of each verse to see how the hymn ties to the Ramayana story. A note on sources: the story of Hanuman is told in the Valmiki Ramayana (Sanskrit), Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas (Awadhi), the Mahabharata, the Puranas and many regional retellings. The accounts agree on the main events but differ in details, so this guide says so wherever traditions differ. ### Hanuman's Birth and Childhood URL: https://hanumanchalisa.live/hanuman/birth-and-childhood/ Hanuman's early life is full of wonder: a child of the wind who tried to catch the sun, was struck down by Indra, and rose again blessed by all the gods. - **Mother**: Anjana (Anjani), a vanara woman in the Ramayana; Puranic tradition calls her an apsara named Punjikasthala who was cursed to be born a vanara - **Father**: Kesari, a vanara chief; Vayu (Pavan), the wind-god, is his spiritual father - **Name meaning**: Hanuman comes from hanu, jaw - **Teacher**: Surya, the sun-god - **Sources**: Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha and Uttara Kandas), Puranas, Ramcharitmanas #### Parents and birth Hanuman is the son of Anjana and Kesari. In the Valmiki Ramayana the elder Jambavan tells Hanuman that Vayu, the wind-god, blessed Anjana with this son, so Hanuman is called Vayu-putra, Pavan-putra and Maruti (son of the Maruts, the winds). Many tellings also honour him as an incarnation, or amsha, of Lord Shiva (Rudra), which is why the Hanuman Chalisa calls him Shankar suvan. Kesari is remembered as a valiant vanara leader, and Hanuman is also called Kesari-nandan and Anjaneya (son of Anjana). #### Where was Hanuman born? Traditions differ. Devotees in Karnataka revere Anjanadri hill near Hampi (the old Kishkindha region). In Maharashtra, Anjaneri near Nashik is held to be his birthplace, and a place near Gumla in Jharkhand is also claimed. All are places of pilgrimage, and each tradition honours its own account. #### The story of the sun One morning the infant Hanuman was hungry and saw the rising sun glowing like a ripe fruit. With the strength of the wind he leapt into the sky towards it. The Hanuman Chalisa remembers this in the line about swallowing the sun thousands of leagues away, thinking it a sweet fruit. The gods feared for the world, and Indra struck the child with his thunderbolt (vajra). It hit his jaw and Hanuman fell to earth, unconscious. #### How he became Hanuman The Sanskrit word hanu means jaw. Because of the injury to his jaw the child was called Hanuman. Vayu was so grieved that he withdrew the wind from the world, and every creature began to suffocate. Brahma and the other gods hurried to restore the child and calm the wind-god. #### Boons from the gods - Brahma is said to have made him immune to Brahma's weapon and granted him a very long life. - Indra declared that his body would be as hard as a vajra, which gave him the name Bajrangbali. - Surya gave him a share of his brilliance and later taught him. - Varuna, Agni, Yama, Kubera and Vishwakarma gave protection from water, fire, death, the mace of Kubera and Vishwakarma's creations. - Vayu blessed him with tremendous speed and freedom of movement. Lists of boons vary between texts, but the meaning is the same: the gods together made him almost invincible. #### The forgotten strength As a growing child Hanuman was playful and used his powers without care, disturbing sages at their prayers. The sages, in a gentle curse, made him forget his own strength until someone reminded him of it. That is why in the Ramayana, when the search party stands helplessly at the seashore, it is the wise bear-king Jambavan who reminds Hanuman of what he can do. #### Education under Surya Hanuman asked Surya to be his guru. Surya could not stop moving across the sky, so Hanuman studied while flying backwards before the sun's chariot, learning the Vedas, scriptures and grammar. In the Ramayana, Ram is deeply impressed by Hanuman's flawless and precise speech, and Lakshman remarks that no fault can be found in it. As his guru-dakshina, Hanuman is said to have promised to serve Surya's son Sugriva, which led him to the story of Ram. Continue with the story of Hanuman and Ram or return to the Hanuman ji guide. A note on sources: the story of Hanuman is told in the Valmiki Ramayana (Sanskrit), Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas (Awadhi), the Mahabharata, the Puranas and many regional retellings. This page follows the story step by step, from his first meeting with Ram to Ram's coronation. - **Where it is told**: Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda and Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana; Kishkindha, Sundara and Lanka Kandas of the Ramcharitmanas - **Key allies**: Ram, Lakshman, Sugriva, Angada, Jambavan - **Key opponents**: Ravana and his sons, including Indrajit - **Signature deeds**: Leap across the ocean, burning of Lanka, Sanjeevani mountain #### Meeting Ram on Rishyamukha While Ram and Lakshman searched for Sita, they reached Rishyamukha mountain near Kishkindha. Sugriva, hiding there from his brother Vali, sent Hanuman to learn who the two strangers were. Hanuman approached in the guise of a humble mendicant and spoke so well that Ram remarked no one who speaks so could be an enemy. Hanuman then revealed his true form, carried the brothers on his shoulders to Sugriva and helped them form the friendship that changed the course of the story. #### The search for Sita After Sugriva regained his kingdom, he sent search parties in all directions. Hanuman travelled south with Angada and Jambavan. Ram gave Hanuman his signet ring as a sign of trust. At the southern shore the vanaras learned from the vulture Sampati that Sita was held on the island of Lanka, a hundred yojanas across the sea. Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his forgotten strength. #### The leap across the ocean Hanuman climbed Mahendra mountain, grew to a colossal size and leapt. The mountain Mainaka rose from the sea to offer him rest, but Hanuman only touched it and moved on. The serpent-mother Surasa tested him by growing her mouth wider, so Hanuman shrank, slipped in and out of her mouth and won her blessing. The shadow-demoness Simhika seized his shadow to drag him down, and Hanuman killed her. The Hanuman Chalisa says that crossing the ocean with Ram's ring in his mouth was no wonder for him. #### Lanka and finding Sita Hanuman reached Lanka at night, shrunk to the size of a cat. Lankini, the guardian goddess of the city, tried to stop him, and he struck her, after which she told him Lanka's end was near. He searched the palaces of Ravana without finding Sita and finally saw her in the Ashoka Vatika, sitting sadly beneath a simsupa tree, guarded by demonesses. Hanuman dropped Ram's ring where she could see it and spoke Ram's name until she trusted him. In the Ramayana, Sita gave him her crest-jewel, the chudamani, as a token for Ram. #### Capture and the burning of Lanka Hanuman uprooted the grove, fought Ravana's guards and killed Ravana's son Akshakumara. Indrajit bound him with the Brahma weapon, and Hanuman allowed himself to be taken to Ravana's court. There he gave a fearless message from Ram and advised Ravana to return Sita. Ravana ordered his tail set on fire. Hanuman grew larger, slipped free and leapt from roof to roof, setting Lanka ablaze while sparing the grove where Sita was. The Hanuman Chalisa remembers him taking a tiny form before Sita and a fearsome one to burn Lanka. #### The report to Ram Hanuman leapt back across the ocean and told the vanaras and Ram everything, giving Ram the chudamani. Ram embraced him and said he had nothing to give in return but himself. Preparations for war began. #### The war and the Sanjeevani mountain In the war with Ravana, Hanuman fought many demon warriors, including Dhumraksha. When Lakshman fell unconscious in battle, the physician Sushena said that life-restoring herbs from a Himalayan mountain were needed before dawn. Hanuman flew north in an instant. Unable to identify the herbs, he lifted the entire mountain and carried it to Lanka. The Ramcharitmanas adds that the demon Kalanemi tried to delay him with a disguise, and Hanuman defeated him. Lakshman was revived, and Ram embraced Hanuman with joy, as the Hanuman Chalisa says. Some tellings add that Bharata mistook him for an enemy as he flew over Nandigram. #### Other retellings: the story of Ahiravana Later regional versions of the Ramayana tell how Ravana's kin Ahiravana (Mahiravana) carried Ram and Lakshman to the netherworld, and Hanuman went after them, defeated Ahiravana and rescued them. This is the story connected to the five-faced Panchmukhi Hanuman. #### Return to Ayodhya and Ram's boon After Ram's coronation in Ayodhya, gifts were given to all his allies. Sita gave Hanuman a precious necklace. Tradition says he broke each pearl and looked inside, searching for Ram's name, and when asked why, he tore open his chest and showed Ram and Sita within his heart. When Ram offered Hanuman any boon, he asked only for unbroken devotion to Ram. Ram granted it, and tradition says Hanuman would live as long as Ram's story is told. Read the story as verses in the meaning of the Hanuman Chalisa, or continue to Hanuman in the Mahabharata. A note on sources: the story of Hanuman is told in the Valmiki Ramayana (Sanskrit), Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas (Awadhi), the Mahabharata, the Puranas and many regional retellings. It shows that, in tradition, he is a chiranjivi, one who never left the world. - **Episodes**: Meeting Bhima (Vana Parva) and the flag of Arjuna's chariot - **Relationship**: Hanuman and Bhima are both sons of Vayu, so Hanuman is Bhima's elder brother - **Chiranjivi**: Counted among the seven traditional immortals #### Hanuman and Bhima During the exile of the Pandavas, Bhima went to fetch a fragrant flower for Draupadi. On his way he found an old monkey lying across the path, his tail stretched out. Bhima, proud of his strength, told him to move aside. The monkey said he was too old and asked Bhima to lift the tail out of the way himself. Bhima, the strongest of the Pandavas, could not move it. Humbled, he asked the monkey's name, and Hanuman revealed himself. Since both were sons of Vayu, they embraced as brothers. Hanuman showed Bhima the enormous form he took to cross the ocean, and blessed him. #### On Arjuna's flag Arjuna's chariot flew a banner with Hanuman on it, which is why Arjuna is called Kapidhvaja (whose flag bears the monkey). Tradition says Hanuman promised to remain on the flag and protect the chariot in the war at Kurukshetra, and that his roar shook the hearts of Arjuna's enemies. #### Hanuman the chiranjivi In popular belief there are seven chiranjivis, the long-lived ones: Ashwatthama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, Kripa and Parashurama. Hanuman's long life comes from the boons of the gods and from Ram's blessing. Devotees believe he is present wherever the story of Ram is recited, often in the form of an unseen listener. #### Hanuman and Tulsidas Tradition says Tulsidas, the poet-saint attributed with the Hanuman Chalisa and the Ramcharitmanas, was helped by Hanuman to see Ram. The Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi is traditionally linked to Tulsidas and Hanuman. Back to the story of Hanuman and Ram or the Hanuman ji guide. Each carries a lesson that people still find useful. #### Strength used in service Hanuman is stronger than almost anyone in the Ramayana, but he never uses that power for himself. Every deed is done for Ram's work. The lesson: real strength is measured by how well it serves others. #### Humility After the greatest feats, such as burning Lanka, Hanuman credits Ram and gives no credit to himself. When Ram praises him, he says that whatever he achieved was through Ram's grace. Humility is one of his defining qualities. #### Remembering your own strength Hanuman himself had forgotten his powers until Jambavan reminded him. Many people are in the same situation. The story encourages us to believe in what we are capable of, and to help others recognise their ability. #### Speak with care and clarity When Hanuman first meets Ram, Ram admires his measured and respectful speech. In Lanka he speaks fearlessly to Ravana yet without insult. The lesson: courage and courtesy go together. #### Courage in the face of fear He leapt into the unknown ocean, faced monsters and entered an enemy city alone. The Hanuman Chalisa says that with Hanuman as protector there is nothing to fear. Devotees turn to him when they need courage. #### Loyalty and devotion Hanuman's devotion to Ram is total. When offered any boon, he asked only for unbroken devotion. In tradition, this shows that the greatest treasure is loving faith. #### Wisdom and intelligence He solves problems with cleverness as well as strength, shrinking to enter Lanka, growing to burn it, and finding Sita by careful search. The lesson: use the right ability at the right time. Explore the full story, read the Hanuman Chalisa meaning, or return to the Hanuman ji guide.
